Wyoming HS (Sr. High) Save Darfur Event: Stop the Genocide Now - In 2003 the world became aware of the horrors going on in the Darfur region of Sudan. A government-backed militia called the Janjaweed, has been terrorizing the people of Darfur for 5 years now. 400,000 people have been brutally murdered, and about 2.5 million people have been driven from their homes. The United Nations has authorized the deployment of a joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping force, but less than half of this force has arrived. To be effective, the peacekeepers need 24 helicopters for transport and security. No country, however, has volunteered to provide even one helicopter. Furthering the problem is Sudan’s relationship with the country of China. China invests heavily in Sudan, thus providing the Sudanese government with funds so they can continue their bloody campaign. China has also blocked UN efforts to hold the Sudanese government responsible for the horror it has caused and end the slaughter in Darfur.

The bleak situation in Darfur has been going on for five years now. It is time for it to stop. On Monday, April 28th, at 7:00 in the evening, there will be a showing of the movie The Devil Came on Horseback in the Great Hall of the Tangeman University Center at the University of Cincinnati. You will also have an opportunity to learn about the current situation in Darfur and how you can do your part to end the genocide. This event is open to the public and admission is free, but donations are welcome. Money from donations will go to Dollars for Darfur and will go directly to helping the people of Darfur through Oxfam International and the International Rescue Committee. Mohandas K. Gandhi once said, “The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problems.” We are capable of ending genocide. You can make a difference. We hope to see you April 28th,at 7:00pm.
