February 11th Modern Day Slavery Event at Wyoming High School - Kevin Bales, sociology professor at Reohampton University in London and president of Free The Slaves and Anti-Slavery International will speak about the estimated 27 million slaves in the world today. This means there are more people in slavery today than there were in any other time in history. A thirty minute film, "Dreams Die Hard," begins the event by depicting the lives of several people trapped in slavery in the United States. Research of Free the Slaves has found cases of human trafficking and slavery in over ninety United States cities. For more information on modern-day slavery and the movement to end it, visit http://freetheslaves.net. Co-Sponsors of the Modern Day Slavery Event: Wyoming High School, Wyoming Youth Services, Cincinnati Freedom Center, University of Cincinnati Peace Village.
Kevin Bales' 1999 Book, "Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy" was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. His documentay film, "Slavery: A Global Investigation" won two Emmy Awards in 2002 and the 2000 Peabody Award. Bales will be discussing his new book, "Ending Slavery: How We Free Today's Slaves", now published in ten different languages. Books will be available for purchase through Barnes & Noble at the event. Pictured: Kevin Bales and his most recent book.
